Movie Review: “Precious”.

I’d been told about this film called “Precious” by pals for a few weeks before I got around to seeing it.

It might take me a while but if someone recommends a film,
I’ll track it down and watch it.

I didn’t think I’d enjoy “Precious” one bit.
I didn’t think it had a lot going for itself or me.

I looked up The Plot:
“In Harlem, an overweight, illiterate teen who is pregnant with her second child is invited to enroll in an alternative school in hopes that her life can head in a new direction“.
(Yawn).

The Tagline was:
“Life is hard.
Life is short.
Life is painful.
Life is rich.
Life is….Precious“.
(I’m not gonna like this).

‘”Starring…..Mariah Carey….Executive Producer…Oprah Winfrey“?
(I’m gonna fucking hate this).

That’s what I thought.
But it was BRILLIANT!

The plot is exactly as described above but the film is just not what you’d expect.

It seriously was a great film.
It wasn’t the girly sapfest I was expecting at all.
It was different and funny as fuck!

It manages to jump effortlessly between appalling violence to some downright hilarious imagination scenes which only add to the whole picture.

A lot of the violence is difficult to watch but on display throughout is some of the finest acting of the year from Gabourey Sidibe who plays the part of Precious and landed a well deserved Oscar for her work.

Everyone in this film puts in a great performance but it’s Gabourey Sidibe who puts in the star turn.
And y’know,
It’s lucky that she did because if she didn’t,
The picture would have belonged to Mariah Carey.

It feels strange typing out praise for Mariah Carey but she utterly blew me away in this film.
She did so good!
At first I didn’t even recognise her.
She is completely convincing and eclipses everything she’s ever done before with this film.

I don’t think you should look up trailers or anything like that.

Just go watch “Precious”.
